①大气中由于光线的折射作用而形成的一种自然现象。当空气各层的密度有较大的差异时，远处的光线通过密度不同的空气层就发生折射或全反射，这时可以看见在空中或地面以下有远处物体的影像。这种现象多在夏天出现在沿海一带或沙漠地方。古人误认为蜃吐气而成，所以叫海市蜃楼，也叫蜃景。②比喻虚幻的事物。
