Building Liao Garden is like doing a jigsaw puzzle

nián kě néng wǔ qiān píng mǐ

2000年可能五千平米

It covered an area of around five thousand square meters in 2000

dào nián jiù yòu duō le wàn duō

到2004年就又多了1万多

Then was enlarged to over ten thousand square meters in 2004

hòu lái jiù yīng gāi zēng jiā dào le liù qī shí mǔ

后来就应该增加到了六七十亩

Later it was increased to sixty or seventy mu

dào xiàn zài dà gài yǒu sān sì wàn píng mǐ

（到现在）大概有三四万平米

Now the area is around thirty to forty thousand square meters

wǒ ne shì nián chū shēng zài yáng jiāng de yī gè chéng cūn

我呢，是1970年出生在阳江的一个程村

I was born in 1970 in Cheng Village of Yangjiang

nián zài guǎng zhōu měi yuàn bì yè

1992年在（广州）美院毕业

I graduated from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1992

rán hòu huí dào yáng jiāng cóng shì yì shù dào xiàn zài

然后回到阳江，从事艺术到现在

Then I returned to Yangjiang and engaged in art

wǒ gè rén de lǐ xiǎng jiù shì zhòng xīn zào yī gè gōng zuò shì

我个人的理想就是重新造一个工作室

My dream was to build a studio

zài yī gè zì rán shēng tài de huán jìng lǐ miàn yuǎn lí chéng shì

在一个自然生态的（环境）里面，远离城市

In a natural environment away from cities

大概2000年的时候

In around 2000

fā xiàn le zhè lǐ yǒu yī gè guǒ yuán

发现了这里有一个果园

I found an orchard here

jiù bǎ tā chéng bāo xià lái

就把它承包下来

Then I became its contractor

nián dài zài wán yī gè yóu xì dì guó shí dài

90年代在玩一个游戏《帝国时代》

The game Age of Empires was really popular in the 1990s

yī kāi shǐ jiù yào fā zhǎn zhǒng dì jiàn shí tóu fáng zi

一开始就要发展种地、建石头房子

You farmed and built stone houses in the game

bǎ nǐ de chéng bǎo jiàn qǐ lái

把你的城堡建起来

To build your own castle

kàn kàn xū nǐ zhuǎn huà chéng xiàn shí yīng gāi shì shén me yàng de zhuàng tài

看看虚拟转化成现实应该是什么样的状态

I wanted to see what it was like to turn a virtual world into reality

wǒ men zài tiān kōng lǐ miàn kàn zhè gè jiàn zhù

我们在天空里面看这个建筑

When we see the building from sky

píng miàn yīng gāi shì yòng le yī gè yóu xì lǐ miàn de mì mì wǔ qì

平面应该是用了一个游戏里面的秘密武器

Its plan resembles a secret weapon in the game

yī gè dēng sān lún de xiǎo hái

一个蹬三轮的小孩

A kid riding a tricycle

dì guó shí dài dōu shì dǎ zhàng

《帝国时代》都是打仗

Players fought battles in Age of Empires

pào dàn dǎ dào yī miàn qiáng

砲弹打到一面墙

Throwing bombs at walls

zhè lǐ yǒu yī xiē hěn qí guài de chuāng zi

这里有一些很奇怪的窗子

So there’re some strange windows

jiù shì pào dàn chuāng

就是砲弹窗

Like the holes left after bomb hits

bǎ gōng néng huà de dōng xī gēn tā jié hé qǐ lái

把功能化的东西跟它结合起来

According to various functions

huì yǒu yī xiē fēn qū

会有一些分区

The building is divided into different zones

yǒu huà shì yǒu zuò zhuāng zhì de kōng jiān

有画室，有做装置的空间

Such as a studio, a space for making installations

dōu xū yào yǒu dǐng guāng

都需要有顶光

Top lighting is needed in lots of space

yáng guāng yào cóng shàng miàn zhào shè xià lái

阳光要从上面照射下来

I want the sun to shine from above

xiàng rén hé tiān de zhè zhǒng guān xì bù yào qiè duàn

像人和天的这种关系，不要切断

So that the connection between human and heaven is not cut off

zhè gè yuàn zi dà gài jiù àn zhào yìn dù de yú gā zhōng xīn

这个院子大概就按照印度的瑜伽中心

The yard is inspired by Indian yoga centers

zuò le yī gè yǒu liú shuǐ de zhōng tíng

做了一个有流水的中庭

There’s running water inside

zhí jìng shì mǐ

直径是12米

Its diameter is around 12m

wǒ mā mā kě néng shì bàn gè yáng chūn rén

我妈妈可能是半个阳春人

My mom is kind of a half Yangchun native

yáng chūn de zhè zhǒng shí tóu shì yáng jiāng méi yǒu de

阳春的这种石头是阳江没有的

Such rocks are exclusive to Yangchun

yào yòng yī gè dūn de diào jī

要用一个50吨的吊机

A crane with a lifting capacity of 50 tons

cóng kōng zhōng bǎ shí tóu zhè me diào xià lái

从空中把石头这么吊下来

Was used to lift up the rocks and move them inside

zhǐ huī dōu kàn bù jiàn wán quán yòng duì jiǎng

指挥都看不见，完全用对讲

The directors couldn’t see each other and communicated merely through interphones

wǎng shàng kàn xū de zhè kuài jiù biàn chéng xiàng yī gè dì qiú yī yàng

（往上看）虚的这块就变成像一个地球一样

When you look up, the part looks like the earth

dàn nǐ zǒu dào zhè lǐ kàn tā jiù biàn chéng le yī gè yuè liàng

但你走到这里看，它就变成了一个月亮

But when you walk here to see, it looks like the moon

There’re some recreation facilities outdoors

There’s a hint of oriental beauty in them

我一直都很喜欢植物

I always like plants

duō ròu kě néng zài zhōng guó chuán tǒng yuán lín lǐ miàn shì méi yǒu de

多肉可能在中国传统园林里面是没有的

Traditional Chinese gardens don’t have succulents

kě yǐ nà rù dào dāng dài zhè gè yuán lín lǐ miàn

可以纳入到当代这个园林里面

I include them into my modern gardens

zhè yī nián dōu shì wǎn shàng yī liǎng diǎn kāi shǐ zhǒng duō ròu

这一年都是晚上一两点开始种多肉

For the past year, I always started growing succulents at one or two in the morning

zhǒng dào tiān liàng

种到天亮

Until dawn

hěn nán tǒng jì yǒu duō shǎo

很难统计（有多少）

It’s difficult to count how many I have

It’s about filling up your stomach anyway. So I turn to tea

zhè lǐ zuì xǐ huān de yīng gāi shì jīn zì tǎ lǐ biān

（这里）最喜欢的应该是“金字塔”里边

My favorite place is the ‘pyramid’

bǎ jīn zì tǎ gēn zhōng shì jié hé qǐ lái

把“金字塔”跟中式结合起来

I combine the ‘pyramid’ with Chinese elements

zhōng jiān bù yào rèn hé de liáng

中间不要任何的粱

There’s no beam inside

gè miàn yī pèng de gāng jié gòu

4个面一碰的钢结构

A steel structure is used

mǐ kuān de huà tā de gāo dù yīng gāi shì mǐ duō

12米宽的话，它的高度应该是10米多

It’s about 12m wide and over 10m high

yī dàn pō miàn àn zhè gè dù shù de luó jí jiàn zào

一旦（坡面）按这个51.51度数的逻辑（建造）

Once the slope is constructed at the angle of 51.51°

tā jiù biàn chéng yī gè néng liàng shōu jí qì

它就变成一个“能量收集器”

The building becomes an ‘energy accumulator’

在坡地里面

It’s not easy to level a 120-m2 plot

zhěng yī gè píng mǐ de píng dì hěn nán de

整一个120平米的平地很难的

On a slope

yòng gāng bǎ tā dā chū lái wǎng wài miàn piāo

用钢把它搭出来，往外面漂

It is supported by steel and looks like floating on the water

nà lǐ yào jiàn qí guān měi shù guǎn

那里要建奇观美术馆

I wanted to build a wonder museum there

wǒ fā xiàn yǒu yī gè téng màn

我发现有一个藤蔓

One day I saw a climber

pá zài nà gè zhù zi shàng

爬在那个柱子上

Growing on the column

xiàn zài jiù zuò hǎo lù jìng

现在就做好路径

Now I set the paths

tā zì jǐ huì zài nà lǐ zǒu

它自己会在那里走

And the climbers grow along

dì guó shí dài dāng shí nián gāng hǎo yě méi luò le

《帝国时代》当时（2011年）刚好也没落了

In 2011, as Age of Imperial fell into decline

wǒ jiù dǎ le yī gè le yuán

我就打了一个“了园”

I changed the garden’s name into Liao Yuan

wán chéng le de le huā yuán de yuán

完成了的了，花园的园

Liao means completion and Yuan refers to garden

dào xiàn zài hái shì yǒu hěn duō jiàn zhù wèi wán chéng de

到现在还是有很多建筑未完成的

Now there’re many buildings to be completed

zhè xiē gōng rén běn shēn gēn zhù wǒ cóng nián gēn dào xiàn zài

这些工人本身跟著我，从93年跟到现在

The workers have been working with me since 1993

zhè zhǒng mò qì shì duō nián

这种默契是20多年

We’ve had such a tacit mutual understanding for over 20 years

zuì duō de shí hòu yīng gāi yǒu liù qī shí rén

最多（的时候）应该有六七十人

The team had sixty to seventy people at most

yǒu nián de zhè zhǒng jiàn zào

有20年的这种建造

The construction lasts for 20 years

yuè lái yuè duō de niǎo kě yǐ zài zhè lǐ tíng liú

越来越多的鸟可以在这里停留

More and more birds come here

zhěng gè shēng tài tōng guò zhè gè shí jiān yīng gāi yǒu huī fù

整个生态通过这个时间应该有恢复

And the whole ecology restores through time

zì rán de nà bù fēn xiǎn lù chū lái le

自然的那部分显露出来了

The natural part shows up

jiàn zhù lǐ xiǎng hé xiàn shí zhōng dá dào yī zhì le

建筑理想和现实中达到一致了

When your ideal building is turned into reality

它就成为一个存在

It comes into being

Liao Yuan is a long-term project

是融进了人的生命里面

Integrates with human life
