I’ve been shooting the series Family Stuff for 16 years

pāi shè de rén jiā yīng gāi shì yǒu hù

（拍摄的人家）应该是有102户

I’ve shot around 102 families

bǐ rú shuō xiàng huó fú

比如说像活佛

Including a living Buddha

diàn yǐng dǎo yǎn yì shù jiā wén wù bǎo hù zhě

电影导演、艺术家、文物保护者

A film director, an artist and a protector of cultural relics

jué dà duō shù dōu hái shì wǒ men shēn biān de pǔ tōng rén

绝大多数都还是我们身边的普通人

But most of them are ordinary people in our lives

zhè dì fāng yǒu xuě

这地方有雪

There’s snow

dì shàng bǎi dōng xī jiù dé zhù yì diǎn ér

地上摆东西就得注意点儿

You have to be careful while arranging stuff on the ground

Oxford sent me a letter

说我们可能在这里头想用你这张照片

Saying they might want to use my picture in their books

I travelled to Arxan and Manzhouli in 2007

自己开车在草原上

I was driving on grasslands

kàn dào yǒu méng gǔ bāo jiù hěn xiǎng pāi yī fú

看到有蒙古包，就很想拍一幅

When I saw a yurt, I really wanted to take a picture of it

liǎng zhǔ rén hái dōu zài

两主人还都在

The husband and the wife were both at home

jiā shàng tā men yòu yǎng le liǎng zhǐ gǒu hái yǒu fēng lì fā diàn

加上他们又养了两只狗，还有风力发电

They also raised two dogs and used wind power

tā duì hàn yǔ hái bù shì hěn tōng

他对汉语还不是很通

He knew a little mandarin

suǒ yǐ wǒ huì gěi tā kàn yī xiē zhào piàn

所以我会给他看一些照片

So I showed him some pictures

tā jiù zhī dào wǒ de yì tú shì yào bǎ dōng xī bān chū qù

他就知道我的意图是要把东西搬出去

He got my intention to move things outside

tā men yóu yú shì yóu mù zhǐ zài zhè zhù bàn nián

他们由于是游牧，只在这住半年

As nomads, they would only live there for half a year

zhè zhāng zhào piàn kě néng jiù shì tā men zài zhè gè huán jìng xià

这张照片可能就是他们在这个环境下

So that photo might be the only picture of them

The photo also influenced a Dutch young man

他在上高中的时候看到了这幅作品

He saw it when he was a high school student

yú shì lái le zhōng guó de nèi méng gǔ lǚ xíng le bàn nián

（于是）来了中国的内蒙古旅行了半年

And later travelled to Inner Mongolia for half a year

他的工作室是在（北京东直门）春秀路，也很大

His studio was on the Chunxiu Road (of Dongzhimen of Beijing) and it was really big

tā yōng yǒu le hěn duō jiāo piàn de kǎo bèi zhè shì bié rén méi yǒu de

他拥有了很多胶片的拷贝，这是别人没有的

He had lots of film copies which were not commonly seen at others’

pāi shè zuì hòu de shí hòu tā hái lái le yī gè kuài dì

（拍摄）最后的时候他还来了一个快递

In the end(of the shooting) a parcel was delivered

jiù bǎ kuài dì yě wǎng huà miàn shàng yī fàng

就把快递也往画面上一放

So it also appeared in the photo

shuō zhè suàn wǒ zuì xīn de jiā dāng

说这算我最新的家当

He said it was his newest stuff

zuì hòu wǒ wèn tā rèn wèi nǎ gè jiā dāng zuì zhòng yào

最后我问他，认为哪个家当最重要？

Finally I asked him which family stuff was the most important to him

tā shuō shén me dōu bù zhòng yào

他说：什么都不重要

And he said ‘nothing is important’

xiàng wǒ zài hǎi nán sān yà jiù pèng dào yī gè jiā dāng tè bié shǎo de

像我在海南三亚，就碰到一个（家当）特别少的

I met a guy who had very a few family stuff

tā dān shēn méi yǒu jié hūn duō suì

他单身，没有结婚，50多岁

He was single, unmarried, in his fifties

jiù shì nà me yī gè jiǎn yì de chuáng

就是那么一个简易的床

He had such a simple bed

tā suǒ yǒu de dōng xī jiā qǐ lái lián kuài qián dōu méi yǒu

他所有的东西加起来，连2000块钱都没有

All his stuff cost no more than 2,000 yuan

dàn shì ràng wǒ gǎn chù zuì shēn de shí hòu tā hái gōng le yī gè guān yīn

但是让我感触最深的时候，他还供了一个观音

But what impressed me the most was that he enshrined and worshipped a Guanyin statue at home

wǒ shì jué dé rén wú lùn pín qióng hái shì fù yǒu

我是觉得人无论贫穷还是富有

I think a human, whether rich or poor

kě néng dōu xū yào yǒu yī gè jīng shén shàng de xìn yǎng

可能都需要有一个精神上的信仰

Probably needs spiritual belief

shào xīng yǒu yī hù lǎo liǎ kǒu

绍兴有一户老俩口

I shot an old couple in Shaoxing

pāi de shí hòu jù lí xiàn zài yǐ jīng nián le

拍的时候距离现在已经12年了

That was already 12 years ago

lǎo liǎ kǒu dōu bù zài le

老俩口都不在了

Both of them have passed away

dōng xī dōu hěn jiǎn dān

东西都很简单

Their family stuff was really simple

nà zhǒng xìng fú gǎn jiù cóng huà miàn lǐ yóu rán ér shēng

那种幸福感就从画面里油然而生

But their happiness struck me

wǒ shì jì gōng xué xiào bì yè

我是技工学校毕业

I graduated from a vocational school

yīn wèi méi yǒu shàng guò dà xué

因为没有上过大学

I never went to a college

gàn le chà bù duō yǒu nián de diàn gōng

干了差不多有10年的电工

I worked as an electrician for around 10 years

zài nián de shí hòu mǔ qīn wèi wǒ mǎi le zhào xiāng jī

在1989年的时候，母亲为我买了照相机

My mother bought me a camera in 1989

nà shì wǒ men jiā zuì guì de jiā dāng

那是我们家最贵的家当

That was the most expensive item of our family

zuì hòu bǎ shè yǐng biàn chéng zhuān yè

最后把摄影变成专业

In the end I turned photography into my career

wán quán dōu shì zì xué

完全都是自学

I learned all by myself

hòu lái yán xù wǎng gòu jiā dāng

后来延续《网购家当》

Later there’re series Online Shopping Family Stuff

hái yǒu yī zǔ hòu jiā dāng

还有一组《90后家当》

And Post-90 Family Stuff

nǐ jiā lǐ yōng yǒu de měi jiàn dōng xī dōu shì nǐ tiāo xuǎn guò de

你家里拥有的每件东西都是你挑选过的

Everything you own at your home is selected by you

jì lù le bù tóng rén de qíng gǎn shì jiè

记录了不同人的情感世界

They record feelings of people

wǒ jué dé shè yǐng zuì dǎ dòng jiù shì tā dài lái de zhēn shí xìng

我觉得摄影最打动就是它带来的真实性

I think what photography touches me the most is its authenticity

ruò gàn nián zhī hòu

若干年之后

Several year later

When you look back to those photos
