I grew up in a military dependents' village

dī xià céng shì guān bīng de juàn cūn

低下层士官兵的眷村

Where soldiers and their families live

yǒu diǎn xiàng dà lù de jūn duì dà yuàn

有点像大陆的军队大院

It's kinda like a military neighborhood in the mainland

shì yè yǒu diǎn xiǎo jī chǔ zhī hòu wǒ cái jié hūn

事业有点小基础之后我才结婚

I only got married after I had a career

suì zài nà gè shí dài bǐ jiào wǎn hūn

36岁，在那个时代比较晚婚

And 36 years old was quite late to marry back then

xiǎo huì jiě tā shì hěn nǚ rén

小慧姐她是很女人

Xiaohui is very attractive as a woman

dàn shì tā yǒu nán rén de gàn cuì

但是她有男人的干脆

But she also has some quality of a man

wǒ shì kàn qǐ lái hěn nán rén

我是看起来很男人

And I have a very masculine look

dàn wǒ yǒu nǚ xìng de xì zhì

但我有女性的细致

But I am very sensitive

It's better to be different in personality

We together make a wonderful family

The answer may be think less for children

There are few chairs in the living room

客厅搞一大堆都是傻子在那看电视

It's silly for a group of people to watch TV together

chú fáng hěn dà

厨房很大

Our kitchen is huge

cān tīng hěn dà

餐厅很大

And so is the dinning room

wǒ tài tài hái mán huì zuò dōng xī de

我太太还蛮会做东西的

My wife cooks very well

wǒ xǐ huān qǐng péng yǒu lái jiā lǐ chī fàn

我喜欢请朋友来家里吃饭

And I like to invite friends to dinner

yǐ qián bà bà gēn wǒ mā jiù xǐ huān jiā lǐ miàn nà gè fēn wéi

以前爸爸跟我妈就喜欢家里面那个氛围

My parents used to do that

hòu miàn jiù shì wò shì gēn kè fáng

后面就是卧室跟客房

In the back are bedrooms and guest rooms

hái yǒu wǒ nǚ ér de fáng jiān

还有我女儿的房间

And my daughters' room

nà xiàn zài gǎi de jiù shì lǐ miàn yī gè dà kōng jiān

那现在改的就是里面一个大空间

Now we transformed it into one huge space

zhōng jiān yǒu gè lā mén

中间有个拉门

With a sliding door in the middle

fēn chuáng bù fēn fáng

分床不分房

We sleep on separate beds in the same room

yīn wèi měi tiān dǎ hū lū

因为每天打呼噜

Because I snore

suǒ yǐ lǎo pó shuì bù hǎo

所以老婆睡不好

My wife suffered a lot

gāng kāi shǐ de shí hòu wǒ lǎo pó jiù tuī wǒ liǎng xià

刚开始的时候，我老婆就推我两下

At first she pushed me to try to make me stop

慢慢就上手了

When that no longer worked

She would punch me in my face

Old couples are like roomies

And our children are visitors

Women care about three rooms

厨房、浴室、更衣室

Kitchen, bathroom and closet

你不能乱改

You don't mess with them

女孩子穿衣服、试衣服是一种快乐

Trying on clothes and getting dressed is so much fun

书房就是我自己的空间

The study is mine

yǐ qián shū fáng hěn dà

以前书房很大

It was big

yào péi zhù hái zi dú shū

要陪著孩子读书

My children used to study here

nà hái zi jiù bān zǒu le

那孩子就搬走了

But they moved out

shū fáng yào gǎi xiǎo

书房要改小

So it's now smaller

xiàn zài bǐ jiào wēn nuǎn

现在比较温暖

More of a cozy

kāi fàng shì de

Open space

zhè gè nián jì le yě méi shén me mì mì le

这个年纪了，也没什么秘密了

When you are my age, you already bid farewell to your little secrets

liǎng gè rén néng gòu tīng dào duì fāng

两个人能够听到对方

We can hear each other

wǒ shuāi dào de shēng yīn tā néng tīng dé dào

我摔倒的声音她能听得到

She can hear me fall

cè suǒ de mén cái zhè me kuān

厕所的门才这么宽

And that's why we have bathroom door so wide

yǐ hòu lún yǐ hǎo jìn dé qù

以后轮椅好进得去

To fit in wheelchairs

wǒ duì yì shù de dōng xī hái mán xǐ huān

我对艺术的东西还蛮喜欢

I like art pieces

jiā lǐ kàn nán nán nǚ nǚ de dōng xī shì píng héng de

家里看男男女女的东西是平衡的

And in our house femininity is balanced with masculinity

zhè fú huà jiù shì hěn nǚ xìng de

这幅画，就是很女性的

The drawing is feminine

yǒu xiē dōng xī bǐ jiào nán xìng de

有些东西比较男性的

Whereas other things may be more masculine

guó huà dà shī lǐ kě rǎn de ér zi

国画大师李可染的儿子

There are paintings of Li Keran's son

huà de dōu shì běi jīng de yī xiē hú tóng

画的都是北京的一些胡同

He paints Beijing hutongs

zhè yī fú shì bái tǎ sì xià miàn

这一幅是白塔寺下面

And this one is under the White Tower Temple

wǒ bà gēn wǒ mā lǎo jiā de hú tóng jiù zài bái tǎ sì xià miàn

我爸跟我妈老家的胡同就在白塔寺下面

My parents' old house was on a hutong under the White Tower Temple

hóng zhuān qiáng jiù shì duì juàn cūn de gǎn jué

红砖墙就是对眷村的感觉

The red bricks is reminiscence of the military dependents' village

yǒu yī xiē zhuān kuài shì cóng juàn cūn chāi le zhī hòu ná huí lái de

有一些砖块是从眷村拆了之后拿回来的

And some bricks were taken back from the village

jiā jiù shì yào yǒu zhè gè gǎn jué

家就是要有这个感觉

Home should be like this

duì tā yǒu gǎn qíng ma

对它有感情嘛

You have feelings for it

jiā rén yī nián néng gòu lǚ xíng huò zhě shì jù huì

家人一年能够旅行或者是聚会

Two reunions or family trips a year

liǎng cì jiù hěn hǎo le

两次就很好了

Is good enough

huì yuè lái yuè shǎo

会越来越少

And there will be less and less

wǒ men cóng lái méi yǒu lǎo guò

我们从来没有老过

We have never grown old before

wǒ men zhǐ kàn bié rén de lǎo guò

我们只看别人的老过

We only see others getting old

zhēn de dào lǎo de shí hòu

真的到老的时候

And when we are old

nǐ rèn shí de guǐ bǐ rèn shí de rén hái duō

你认识的鬼比认识的人还多

You know more dead people than those are alive
