The father has cancer

他们各自每个人怎么面对这个家庭变故

And how each of them faces the misfortune

mǔ qīn kěn dìng shì dì yī gè rén zhī dào

母亲肯定是第一个人知道

Surely the mother is the first one to know

tā de jué dìng shì bù ràng zhàng fū zhī dào

她的决定是不让丈夫知道

And she decides not to tell her husband

yǐn mán zhè gè shì shí

隐瞒这个事实

Hiding the truth from him

zì jǐ qù chéng dān zhè yī qiè

自己去承担这一切

And bearing all by herself

ér zi kě néng bǐ mǔ qīn shāo wǎn zhī dào bà bà shēng bìng zhè gè shì qíng

儿子可能比母亲稍晚知道爸爸生病这个事情

The son probably knows that his father is sick a little later than his mother

dàn shì tā shì yī gè wèi chéng nián rén

但是他是一个未成年人

But he is a juvenile

bǐ jiào měng dǒng

比较懵懂

And is still quite ignorant

tā táo kè fān qiáng chāo bié rén zuò yè

他逃课翻墙，抄别人作业

He skips classes, climbs over walls and copies others’ homework

zài xué xiào zuò chū de zhè me yī xiē fǎn pàn xíng wèi

在学校做出的这么一些反叛行为

He has such rebellious behaviors at school

bà bà shì zuì hòu zhī dào zì jǐ bìng qíng de rén

爸爸是最后知道自己病情的人

The father is the last one to know his disease

tā xuǎn zé tíng zhǐ chī yào fàng qì zhì liáo

他选择停止吃药，放弃治疗

He chooses to stop taking medicine and receiving treatment

bìng méi yǒu duì shēng mìng zhǎng duǎn zài yì

并没有对生命长短在意

He doesn’t care about the length of life

wǒ tīng guò de yī gè xíng yè lǐ miàn de qián bèi

我听过的一个行业里面的前辈

One senior in the industry once said

shuō jiù shì nǐ men qīng nián dǎo yǎn pāi de dōng xī dōu shì nà yàng

说就是你们（青年导演）拍的东西都是那样

‘Your(young directors’) films are almost the same

wú wài hū jiù shì qióng shān è shuǐ zhǎng jìng tóu

无外乎就是穷山恶水长镜头

No more than predicaments, full-length shots

sāo mā sǐ diē xióng hái zi

骚妈死爹熊孩子

Coquettish mother, dead father and mischievous children

我当时那么一听

When I heard it

wa sāi wǒ de piàn zi bù shì quán zhōng le ma

哇塞，我的片子不是全中了嘛

I was like ‘wow, that’s exactly what my film is about’

From my own experience

jié hé le wǒ liǎng gè rén shēng zhōng bǐ jiào kùn huò de jiē duàn

结合了我两个人生中比较困惑的阶段

Combining two stages of life where I feel quite confused

yī gè jiù shì xiàng diàn yǐng lǐ miàn de gāo zhōng shí qī

一个就是像电影里面的高中时期

One is the high school stage in the film

měi tiān gēn wǒ mā jiù shì yǒu wú xiàn de zhēng chǎo

每天跟我妈就是有无限的争吵

I had endless fight with my mom

lìng wài yī gè jiē duàn qí shí shì wǒ bà shēng bìng de shí jiān

另外一个阶段，其实是我爸生病的时间

Another stage is where my dad got sick

nǐ yǒu diǎn wú zhù

你有点无助

I was kind of helpless

nǐ méi fǎ zuò shén me yě gǎi biàn bù le shén me

你没法做什么，也改变不了什么

I couldn’t do anything or change anything

wǒ měi tiān dōu kàn zhù wǒ mā

我每天都看著我妈

Every day I saw my mom

zài jīng shén fēi cháng gāo yā de zhuàng kuàng xià

在精神非常高压的状况下

Under high pressure

tā yào chù lǐ jiā lǐ miàn gè zhǒng shì qíng

她要处理家里面各种事情

She had to cope with the things in the family

ràng tā jué dé hěn méi yǒu ān quán gǎn

让她觉得很没有安全感

And she felt very insecure

suǒ yǐ wǒ jiù xiǎng jiù gòu jiàn zhè me yī gè

所以我就想就构建这么一个

So I want to build such a female character

bèi gū lì de nǚ xìng jiǎo sè

被孤立的女性角色

Who is isolated

yī míng hòu lái gēn tā bà hái yǒu tā men yī jiā rén

一鸣后来跟他爸还有他们一家人

Yiming, his father and his family go back to hometown

rán hòu huí xiāng le yǒu zhè me yī gè xún gēn zhī lǚ

然后回乡了，有这么一个寻根之旅

In search of roots

nà zhǒng jiāng sǐ zhī rén

那种将死之人

People who’re gonna die

tā huì yǒu yī duàn shí jiān jiù huì kàn dào yī xiē bù tóng de dōng xī

他会有一段时间就会看到一些不同的东西

Would see some different things in a certain period

wǒ xiǎng tōng guò zhè me yī gè chāo xiàn shí

我想通过这么一个超现实

So I want to build such a surrealistic setting

tā men huí dào le jiù bà bà yǐ qián chū shēng chéng zhǎng de dì fāng

他们回到了就爸爸以前出生成长的地方

They go back to where the father was born and grew up

bà bà kě néng jìn rù le zhī hòu

爸爸可能进入了之后

After the father enters into it

jiù yù dào le zì jǐ de lǎo mǔ qīn hái yǒu gē gē

就遇到了自己的老母亲，还有哥哥

He meets his mother and brother

huí dào le zì jǐ yǐ qián zhù de lǎo fáng zi lǐ miàn

回到了自己以前住的老房子里面

And goes back to the old house where he once lived

hái shì gēn yǐ qián yī yàng

还是跟以前一样

It’s the same as before

ér zi dāng xià miàn duì de qíng kuàng gēn fù qīn dāng nián shì xiāng shì de

儿子当下面对的情况跟父亲当年是相似的

The son faces a similar situation to his father then

jiù shì ér zi yě kě wàng lí kāi jiā qù dào yī gè xīn de dì fāng

就是儿子也渴望离开家，去到一个新的地方

He wants to leave home to go to a new place

rán hòu tā dé miàn duì tā gēn mǔ qīn de zhè me yī gè guān xì

然后他得面对他跟母亲的这么一个关系

Then he has to face the relationship with his mom

zuì hòu

At the end

diàn yǐng lǐ miàn de mā mā jiù péi ér zi chōu le gēn yān

电影里面的妈妈就陪儿子抽了根烟

The mother in the film smokes a cigarette with her son

jiù cóng yī gè nián fù zài jiā tíng

就从一个黏附在家庭

Then she turns from a female character

zhè me yī gè nǚ xìng jiǎo sè

这么一个女性角色

Who sticks to her family

zhàng fū qù shì zhī hòu

丈夫去世之后

To an independent woman

rán hòu zhēn zhèng biàn chéng le

然后真正变成了

Who has her own thoughts and ideas

yǒu zì jǐ sī kǎo yǒu xiǎng fǎ de zhè me yī gè dú lì nǚ xìng

有自己思考、有想法的这么一个独立女性

After her husband passes away

wǒ pāi diàn yǐng shì wǒ xiǎng zhí miàn wǒ zì jǐ

我拍电影是我想直面我自己

I want to face myself through the film

wǒ xiǎng gēn wǒ mā hé jiě

我想跟我妈和解

I want to make peace with my mom

huò zhě shuō gēn wǒ qù shì de bà bà yǒu yī zhǒng guān xì de hé jiě

或者说跟我去世的爸爸有一种关系的和解

Or with my dad who passed away

jiù suǒ yǒu de zhè xiē xiǎng gēn bà bà mā mā shuō de huà

就所有的这些想跟爸爸（妈妈）说的话

I put all I want to say to my parents
