niè pán tā jiǎng le jiù shì yī gè chāo yuè shēng sǐ

涅槃它讲了就是一个超越生死

Nirvana is beyond life and death

cháng lè wǒ jìng fán nǎo yǒng xī de zhè me yī gè zhuàng tài

常乐我净，烦恼永息的这么一个状态

It’s a state of being content, pure and free from trouble permanently

nián wǒ zì jǐ guī yī chéng wèi yī gè fú jiào tú yǐ hòu

2003年我自己皈依成为一个佛教徒以后

I was converted to Buddhism in 2003

zài nián wǒ dào le gān sù qìng yáng běi shí kū sì

在2015年，我到了甘肃庆阳北石窟寺

In 2015, I went to the Beishiku Temple in Qingyang, Gansu

kàn dào běi wèi liú xià lái de qī zūn dà fú

看到北魏留下来的七尊大佛

I saw the seven giant Buddhas built in the Northern Wei Dynasty

qì shì fēi cháng hóng wěi

气势非常宏伟

They were really magnificent

dāng chǎng bèi gǎn dòng dé zhēn shì jiào lèi rú quán yǒng

当场被感动得真是叫泪如泉涌

I was so touched that I burst out in tears

dāng shí jiù fā le gè yuàn cóng shì niè pán zhè gè tí cái

当时就发了个愿，从事涅槃这个题材

I made a promise at that time that I would create under the theme of Nirvana

zhǎn lǎn yī gòng dà yuē yǒu jiàn zuò pǐn

展览一共大约有90件作品

The exhibition shows around 90 works

北魏的一个秀骨清像

Xiuguqingxiang is a typical style of the paintings in the Northern Wei Dynasty

zǎo qī de běi wèi zào xiàng tā jiā shā shì chéng xiàn niǎo chì zhuàng de

早期的北魏造像，他袈裟是呈现鸟翅状的

The Buddha images in the early Northern Wei Dynasty have bird-wing kasaya

liǎng biān yǒu diǎn zhāng kāi yī yàng de

两边有点张开一样的

With spreading train

huà shàng nǐ kě yǐ gǎn jué dào nà jiā shā jiù xiàng fēi qǐ lái yī yàng

画上你可以感觉到那袈裟就像飞起来一样

You can feel the kasaya in the painting is flying

zhuō pǔ de xiàn tiáo shì lái zì yú shí kè de

拙朴的线条是来自于石刻的

The simple lines are inspired by stone carving

yīn wèi wǒ kàn le dà liàng de shí kū

因为我看了大量的石窟

Because I’ve seen lots of grottoes

fēi cháng pǔ sù de nà xiē xiàn tiáo

非常朴素的那些线条

I use those really simple lines

yòng zài wǒ de huì huà lǐ miàn

用在我的绘画里面

zhèng shì wǒ xū yào de

They’re just what I need

佛像的开脸上面

As for the Buddha’s face

xuǎn yòng le běi cháo shí qī de zhè yàng de yī gè fú xiàng de miàn róng

选用了北朝时期的这样的一个佛像的面容

I choose that in the Northern Dynasties

fēi cháng dì piāo yì chāo fán tuō sú

非常地飘逸，超凡脱俗

It’s really elegant and otherworldly

yīn wèi yuè lái yuè duō de rén rèn shí dào běi cháo zào xiàng de diāo sù de gāo fēng

因为越来越多的人认识到北朝造像的雕塑的高峰

Because more and more people realize that the Northern Dynasties represent the peak of Buddha statues

duì zǎo qī cóng yìn dù chuán guò lái shí jiān jiǔ le yǐ hòu

对早期从印度传过来，时间久了以后

Buddha statues originated from India

zhōng guó rén yī dìng huì zài zhè piàn tǔ dì shàng

中国人一定会在这片土地上

But after such a long time, the Chinese have surely carved works

diāo kè fú hé tā men zì jǐ shěn měi qīng xiàng de zhè yī pī zuò pǐn

雕刻符合他们自己审美倾向的这一批作品

Which accord more with their own aesthetic preference

zuì zǎo qī niè pán de tí cái qí shí shì cóng yìn dù kāi shǐ de

最早期涅槃的题材其实是从印度开始的

The theme of Nirvana in fact derived from India

shuāng suō luó shù jiān zhè yàng fú tuó rù miè de zhè yàng yī gè chǎng jǐng

双娑罗树间这样佛陀入灭的这样一个场景

The Buddha entered the realm of Nirvana between two Sal trees

wǒ děng yú shuō shì bǎ fú xiàng yòu qǐng dào zhōng guó běn tǔ lái le

我等于说是把佛像又请到中国本土来了

I bring Buddha statues to China again

ràng tā zài zhōng guó de shān shuǐ jiān niè pán

让他在中国的山水间涅槃

To let the Buddha enter the realm of Nirvana in the mountains and waters here

zài shuāng méi shù xià niè pán

在双梅树下涅槃

Between two prune trees

I integrate oriental elements such as classical Chinese gardens, mountains and water with them

还有中国的文人的书房的空间

And the study of Chinese men of letters

zuò wèi yī gè zhōng guó rén

作为一个中国人

As a Chinese

nà xiē yuán sù tā jiù zì rán ér rán liú tǎng zài nǐ de xuè yè lǐ tóu

那些元素，它就自然而然流淌在你的血液里头

Those elements are naturally in my blood

wǒ shì cóng xiǎo duì tǎ tè bié mí liàn

我是从小对塔特别迷恋

Since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by towers

zhí dào wǒ xué le fú fǎ yǐ hòu

直到我学了佛法以后

Until I learned Buddhist Dharma

wǒ cái zhī dào tǎ qí shí zuì zǎo de zài yìn dù de yī gè lái lì

我才知道塔其实最早的在印度的一个来历

I got to know the origin of tower in India

yǎn mái le fú tuó de shě lì

掩埋了佛陀的舍利

Buddha’s relics was placed in a tower

wǒ huà le niè pán yuán lái tā men dōu shì lián zài yī qǐ de

我画了涅槃，原来它们都是连在一起的

I draw Nirvana, and it turns out that they’re connected

liǎng nián qián wǒ xiǎng dào yòng kū zhī lái zuò niè pán fú

两年前，我想到用枯枝来做涅槃佛

Two years ago, I came up with the idea of making Buddha’s Nirvana with deadwood

rú mèng huàn pào yǐng zhè yàng yī gè zhuàng tài

如梦幻泡影这样一个状态

It’s like a dream, a bubble

wǒ jué dé kū zhī jiù shì cóng chén tǔ zhōng lái zuì hòu yòu huàn huà chéng shén me dōu méi yǒu

我觉得枯枝就是从尘土中来，最后又幻化成什么都没有

From my point of view, deadwood comes from dust and ends up in dust

wǒ shì gèng qīng xiàng yú tā jiù fàng zài zì rán nà biān

我是更倾向于它就放在自然那边

I’m inclined to put it there as it is

guò le duō shǎo nián yǐ hòu nà xiē shù zhī jiù zì rán ér rán dì fǔ làn le

过了多少年以后，那些树枝就自然而然地腐烂了

The deadwood will decay naturally after years

zhí dào yǒu yī tiān jiù wán quán méi yǒu

直到有一天就完全没有

And just disappear one day

wǒ zì jǐ shì jīng cháng yǒu yī zhǒng gǎn jué

我自己是经常有一种感觉

I often have this feeling

kě néng duō shǎo shì yǐ qián céng jīng shì shí kū sì de yī gè xiǎo huà jiàng

可能多少世以前曾经是石窟寺的一个小画匠

I was a painter in a grotto several lifetimes ago

zài dūn huáng nǎ gè dòng lǐ miàn dà gài diǎn guò yī zhǎn dēng

在敦煌哪个洞里面大概点过一盏灯

I probably lighted a lamp in one of the grottoes in Dunhuang

suǒ yǐ zhè bèi zi cái yǒu fú bào jì xù lái cóng shì zhè yàng fú jiào de yī gè tí cái

所以这辈子才有福报继续来从事这样佛教的一个题材

So I’m fortunate enough to continue to work on the theme of Buddha

hòu lái qí shí cái fā xiàn nián qīng rén cái shì wǒ zuò pǐn de zuì dà de fěn sī

后来其实才发现年轻人才是我作品的最大的粉丝

Later I find that most of my fans are young people

tè bié yuàn yì yòng qù zuò wēi xìn tóu xiàng

特别愿意用去做微信头像

They really like taking my paintings as their WeChat profile photos

kàn kàn wǒ de zuò pǐn hǎo xiàng dé dào hěn dà de liáo yù
