1948年解放战争进入第三年，中国人民解放军同国民党军进行战略决战的条件已经成熟。根据中共中央军委和毛泽东制定的作战方针，东北解放军在林彪、罗荣桓指挥下，于1948年9月12日发起了辽沈战役。这次战役历时五十二天，解放军歼敌四十七万人，解放了东北全境，并为解放平津和华北准备了前提条件。
